Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module revises A-level classical mechanics (developing the theory in three dimensions using vectors) and introduces basic concepts in Newtonian mechanics and Einstein's special theory of relativity. The module ensures that you have had exposure to the classical mechanics and special relativity that is required in future physics modules.

Principal learning outcomes

At the end of the module, you should: be able to utline the place of Newtonian mechanics in the development of science and to explain the experimental basis for Newton’s three laws of motion; be able to solve F =d p /dt for a variety of simple cases. and be familiar with the concepts of potential and kinetic energy, and of the conservation of linear momentum and of energy; be familiar with the concepts of potential and kinetic energy, and of the conservation of linear momentum and of energy; be able to solve simple problems of motion under central forces using conservation of angular momentum and of energy; understand the concepts of inertial frames of reference and the universality of the speed of light, and will have a basic understanding of relativistic effects (e.g. Length contraction and time dilation) and Lorentz invariants; be familiar with Einstein’s energy and mass relation, energy and momentum of elementary particles.
