Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This Module addresses some of the fundamental challenges facing contemporary societies. Massive movements of population and associated geo-political forces have generated significant tensions and conflict between groups variously characterised in terms of 'race', ethnicity and faith. We begin by exploring the ontological status of the key concepts and assess their historical roots and trajectories. This provides the context for a detailed exploration of their current significance and the ways in which they intersect with age, class and gender.Substantively, we look at exclusionary processes in key institutional areas such as immigration, housing, education, the labour market and policing, and explore the ways in which these processes can be challenged. The ultimate aim is to provide a critical appraisal of these issues in the context of policies designed to promote 'inclusive' and 'cohesive' societies.
