## Module content and teaching

###### Principal aims

The module will introduce students to probabilistic models and statistical methods used in the analysis of genetic data.

###### Principal learning outcomes

Students will gain a basic understanding of the rapidly growing field of genome-wide association studies, and be exposed to practical applications of common statistical tests. By the end of the course students should be able to: 1. Describe simple discrete-time reproductive models and use them to derive the standard coalescent model. 2. Use coalescent theory to relate DNA sequence variation to genealogical history. 3. Evaluate, from simple datasets, evidence for linkage disequilibrium and disease assocations using basic association tests. 4. Discuss the wider issues involved in applying association tests to whole genomes.
