Module content and teaching
Principal aims
Through tutor-led workshops, seminar discussions, presentations and workshops with artists, this double-weighted first-year core module will introduce you to several types to contemporary practice. In the first two terms, you will be introduced to a variety of approaches to creating theatre and performance such as devising, new writing, adaptation, dramaturgy, and/or storytelling; develop skills in technical aspects of lighting and sound; learn about the range of performance practices that make up the contemporary theatre scene through theatre visits, DVDs, and web-based and written documentation of theatre and performance; and improve your own critical and creative responses to work seen and discussed. In the third term, you will work in small groups to create a fifteen-minute performance that uses your skills in creating performance, lighting, and sound. The module proceeds through discussions, hands-on practical work, and collaborative devising processes.
Principal learning outcomes
By the end of the module you will have: Considered the inter-relationship between theory and practice in creative practice; Developed an awareness of key conceptual and creative processes that underpin the realisation of creative projects; Gained practical skills in lighting and sound; Contributed to the generation and realisation of a range of creative projects through an understanding of appropriate practical skills, techniques and performance vocabularies; Developed skills in written and verbal communication, collaborative working and problem-solving.
