Module content and teaching

Principal aims

 To introduce students to the theory, knowledge and practice of both quantitative and qualitative research in the social sciences  To enable students to grasp the principles underlying the design, doing and analysis of a range of quantitative and qualitative approaches  To introduce students to the conflicting, paradigms in educational research  To encourage students to identify the theoretical and methodological grounds which educational research is based upon  To examine the ethical and political issues underlying social research  To equip students with the skills and competencies to undertake action research in order to develop subject specific knowledge and pedagogical skills

Principal learning outcomes

• Identify theoretical and methodological grounds on which educational research is based • Analyse the relationship between research questions, method and methodology • Identify appropriate quantitative and qualitative research methods for particular research questions and settings in order to be able to undertake research • Critically analyse own wider professional practice practice in order to select an area for improvement which can be examined • Critically evaluate evidence from action research
