Module content and teaching

Principal aims

Practicing engineers have a legal and moral responsibility to ensure the health and safety of their colleagues, workforce and the general public as well as observing environmental laws and best practice. This module outlines the legal framework, discusses strategies for managing risk and H&S and identifies the key hazards in tunnelling and underground works.

Principal learning outcomes

At completion, students will be able to:Evaluate potential hazards met in the construction and operation of underground spaces and apply sound management strategies to their mitigation; Understand the legislation pertaining to health & safety and the environment as applied to construction works associated with underground projects.
