Module content and teaching
Principal aims
This module will help you understand what it means to be interculturally competent. It examines key multidisciplinary conceptualisations of intercultural (communication) competence and applies them to the analysis of authentic intercultural interaction. It explores how intercultural competencies impact on the achievement of mutual understanding and the management of rapport in the workplace, using authentic data to examine these issues. The module also considers the challenging issue of how intercultural competence can be assessed, and examines some tools that can be used for this.
Principal learning outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of multidisciplinary conceptualisations of intercultural (communication) competence, to explain the main elements of analytic frameworks that are important and useful for analysing intercultural discourse and interaction, and to describe a range of different instruments and procedures for assessing intercultural (communicative) competence.
