Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module is designed to make direct use of students’ experience in the Young Learners’ field. In particular students need to design materials for a target group of Young Learners along with an academic rationale for the decisions made in the creation of the materials. The module will examine different types of syllabus that have been used for teaching English at the primary level in different parts of the world. Appropriate means of assessing young pupils’ achievements and progress will also be discussed. Some core elements of syllabus design and implementation are shared with ELT/ESP Professional Practice and this module builds on input from the English for Young Learners specialist option.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will have enhanced their practical skills in syllabus and course design and materials writing and evaluation. In particular, students will be able to articulate the relationship between the linguistic and psychological underpinnings of different approaches to course design; consider the relationship between syllabus, materials and methods in EYL; articulate the practical implications of adopting different approaches and principles in undertaking course and materials design; consider ways in which course and materials development need to accommodate particular young learner needs and particular cultural, educational and language contexts; be able to design courses and materials consistent with different theoretical frameworks and which are appropriate for young learners' needs, levels and situations; evaluate, select and adapt materials suitable for different needs and levels of young learners.
