Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The Teaching of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) incorporates English for Academic or Educational Purposes (EAP) and English for Occupational Purposes (EOP), and is a well-established branch of English language teaching requiring a specialised approach to course design. This module usually shares core sessions with the Professional Practice (English Language Teaching) module (ET972). Other strands aim to give a broad overview of the field and provide a practical training in course and syllabus design and materials production.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will have enhanced their practical skills in syllabus and course design and materials writing and evaluation. In particular, students will be able to articulate the relationship between the linguistic and psychological underpinnings of different approaches to course design; consider the relationship between syllabus, materials and methods in ESP; articulate the practical implications of adopting different approaches and principles in undertaking course and materials design; consider ways in which course and materials development need to accommodate particular specific learner needs and particular business, educational and language contexts; be able to design courses and materials consistent with different theoretical frameworks and which are appropriate for different specific business and academic needs, levels and situations; evaluate, select and adapt materials suitable for different specific needs and levels of learner.
