Module content and teaching
The module provides an understanding of the use of raw materials such as water, energy and land in industry and transport. It lays the foundation for further in-depth studies of ways in which biotechnology can support recycling, reuse of existing materials and in the generation of new supplies of raw materials.
Principal learning outcomes
A broad knowledge and understanding of the importance of raw materials in manufacturing, energy supply and food production with emphasis on non-renewable resources; Recognise and analyse the problems associated with continued use of existing resources through life cycle analysis and the concepts of raw material efficiencies; Recognise the importance of recycling, reuse and replacement to improve supplies of raw materials into the future; Gain a thorough understanding of the importance of bioprocesses in the treatment of wastes and by-products; Gain a thorough understanding of the use and potential of biotechnology in the production of new energy sources; Recognise the importance of education, multidisciplinary interaction and research for the future development of the speciality; Be aware of issues involved in the widespread exploitation in new processes.
