Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The primary aim of this module is to introduce the student to molecular biology and genetic engineering to give them a clear understanding of the scientific principles and how these have been used to advance biotechnology and industrial bioprocesses.

Principal learning outcomes

(a) Subject knowledge and understanding: A broad knowledge and understanding of the molecular biology of the cell in the biotechnological context; An understanding of genetic engineering, the principles and problems; With an understanding of molecular biology and genetic engineering the student has the fundamental knowledge to address the problems and issues associated with industrial bioprocesses and commercialisation of bioscience products.(b) Subject Specific and Key Skills: Recognise and analyse the specific problems associated with application and exploitation of cellular systems and genetic engineering; (c) Cognitive skills: The primary challenge for this module is for students to identify and analyse the issues at the molecular/gene level which may impact on successful commercialisation of a bioscience product or procedure; They will acquire the skill of formulating a hypothesis and devising a strategy to test its validity in a biotechnological context.
