Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module focuses on providing the students with an understanding of the environmental and safety risks associated with bioprocessing together with methods for limiting damage and risk. Reference to practical examples will be used wherever possible.

Principal learning outcomes

" Achieve a broad understanding of the environmental and safety issues of bio- processes, the governing standards and regulations and be able to select management strategies on the basis of critical analysis of the relevant issues; Have an understanding of the methodologies used to undertake environmental impact and safety risk assessments and be able to demonstrate these methodologies in realistic scenarios; Develop an ability to communicate findings effectively and coherently through oral, written and other appropriate modes of expression; To understand the methodologies for evaluation of bioprocesses in the context of environmental and safety performance; Have a thorough understanding of processes for the bioremediation of contaminated land and water; Be aware of the growing importance of environmental and public safety issues in the context of bio-processes; Recognise the importance of public perception in the future development of biotechnology."
