Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The main aim of this module is to develop an understanding of Britain’s past, current and future relationship with European integration. The concern is to familiarise students with the history of Britain’s relationship with the European Union (EU) and its previous incarnations; different theoretical approaches to studying Britain in the EU; the impact of European integration on the British state; Britain’s role in flagship EU policy areas and to consider some of the possible impacts of the 2016 referendum vote to leave the EU.

Principal learning outcomes

The objective of the module is to familiarise students with Britain’s complex and oft-misunderstood relationship with the EU. Students will develop an understanding of the historical evolution of Britain’s relationship to European integration and consider its impact on the nature of the British state. They will learn to identify and critically reflect on the different theoretical approaches to Britain in Europe and the EU’s effect on Britain, assessing to what extent Britain can be referred to as a uniquely ‘awkward partner’. This will enable them to critically assess Britain’s role in shaping key EU policies and the impact these have had on Britain. They will also learn to critically reflect on the nature of British Euroscepticism and identify and assess some of the possible impacts of Brexit on the British political economic order. Finally, the module will allow students to develop their critical, evaluative and communicative skills through in-class presentations, participation in class activities and discussions and through the production of a long essay.
