Principal aims
To introduce students to statistical (and bioinformatic tools) for summarising and analysing data in the life sciences.
Principal learning outcomes
"(a) Subject knowledge and understanding Statistical methods: Application of statistical methods to determine data quality and extract key results - data mining; Parameter estimation; Sequence analysis and alignment; Phylogenetic tree construction. (b) Key Skills Know how to assess the quality of a data set from diverse biophysical techniques; Know how to assess the quality of a data set from micro arrays; Able to identify appropriate statistical/bioinformatics tools to analyse data and hence draw sound inferences; Able to formulate and implement an appropriate hypothesis test to determine statistical significance. (c) Cognitive Skills: The key challenge for this module is for students to be able to analyze data and to be able to assess data quality. They will also further understand the mathematical processes of data manipulation especially with regard to improving signal to noise ratios.(d) Subject-Specific/Professional Skills Know how to analyse data from a range of techniques. Able to implement data mining, parameter estimation, and appropriate statistical tests."
Timetabled teaching activities
Lectures for the module 24 hours; Workshops for the module 8 hours; Seminars for the module 6 hours; Total contact hours 38 hours;
