Module content and teaching

Principal aims

In this course, we spend five sessions reading texts that cross borders of a linguistic and/or cultural nature, and follow each session with a workshop devoted to original texts written by the course members out of the encounter with these border crossings.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: demonstrate familiarity with a range of writing from different linguistic and/or cultural provenances; show a critical awareness of the strategic, structural and rhetorical choices available to or imposed upon the writers of these texts; produce original writing reflecting an understanding of the issues of language, cognition and cultural relativity underlying these texts; articulate a sense of the self as a social, psychological, philosophical and political individual in a world increasingly alert to the shaping power of cultural and linguistics difference; learn effectively, communicate persuasively, and work productively in a team/workshop situation.
