Module content and teaching

Principal aims

1) To develop an understanding of leadership, educational change and improvement from a theoretical, research and practical perspective. 2) To compare, evaluate and critique international educational reform efforts. 3) To develop knowledge about the dynamics of leading improvement as a strategy for educational change. 4) To assist students to lead organisational improvement and change. 5) To understand the relationship between leadership, educational improvement and learner outcomes.

Principal learning outcomes

1) To demonstrate report writing, research skills and methods, and working with and leading other professionals. 2) Describe and discuss a range of influences on organisational improvement and apply that understanding in order to undertake change and development in the participant’s organisation. 3) Outline alternative leadership theories and interpretations of effective leadership practice. 4) Collect and use data to diagnose areas for improvement. 5) Evaluate theory and research on improving pupil and student achievement, and apply this knowledge. 6) Use models, theories, and conceptual frameworks from research and other literature to plan improvements and evaluate activities and programmes to improve achievement.

Timetabled teaching activities

The LECI Online module is built around 8 study units. These can be studied in any order, or students might wish to choose their own order of study depending on their particular interests. It is recommended that students start with Unit 1 to introduce them to the key concepts and theories that are essential to understanding leading educational change and improvement. The online course will use the study units to ensure effective engagement by students. There will be opportunities for students to participate in Skype sessions where guest speakers will lead sessions on their special interest and experience in leading educational change and improvement. Students will have the opportunity for a Skype tutorial to discuss feedback on the assignment proposal. The Study Units are: 1. Introduction to the Module and defining and understanding leadership. 2. Educational effectiveness and improvement. 3. Theories of leadership and management. 4. Leadership for learning. 5. Leadership and diversity. 6. Distributed leadership and school improvement. 7. Leadership and teams. 8. Building leadership capacity.

Other essential notes

This is an online variant of the Leading Educational Change and Improvement module, which is the core module on all variants of the MA Educational Leadership and Management. The online version gives the option for the module to be delivered via distance learning in the first instance for students in Abu Dhabi on the MA Educational Leadership and Management, and then potentially as an option for the Singapore and home variants of the MA also.
