Module content and teaching

Principal aims

What is leadership? What is teamwork? And what role, if any, does culture play in this context? This module will address these and other related questions by introducing you to some theoretical approaches, models and concepts that will help you understand the complexities of leadership, teamwork and culture. A particular focus of the module is on communication and the crucial role it plays in this context. In addition to following some of the most recent debates around leadership, teamwork and culture, this module will also analyse the relationship between these notions ‘in action’ by exploring numerous examples of how leadership and teamwork are actually done in different socio-cultural and intercultural contexts.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of multidisciplinary conceptualisations of leadership, critically discuss the role of culture for leadership and teamwork, and explain the crucial role of communication. They should also be able to critically evaluate different approaches to leadership, teamwork and culture, and draw informed conclusions, and to analyse and discuss examples of teamwork and leadership in different cultural and intercultural contexts using different conceptual frameworks.
