Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module provides a hands-on introduction to the varying ways in which ICT (Information and Communication Technology) can be used in English Language Teaching. We will look at the various roles that technology has taken in the classroom: as tutor, as tool and as messenger. We will explore how teachers can harness the rapidly evolving technologies now available to promote more effective language learning. Among the specific uses of technology we will cover are: authoring programs, WebQuests, wikis, blogs, vodcasting, concordancing, mobile learning, and using an Interactive Whiteboard.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will have developed a good overall understanding of the current technologies that can be incorporated into the teaching and learning of English; built a strong understanding of the theoretical underpinning that links current approaches to language learning and the use of technology; developed a strong conceptual framework for understanding and evaluating ICT tools and technologies and their role in language teaching; cultivated a PLN (Personal Learning Network) and understood how to utilize and use a whole variety of tools and technologies that will allow them to continue to develop professionally after the course; understood the key areas of research currently being undertaken in the area of ICT and developed interest in areas of personal relevance.

Timetabled teaching activities

Weeks 1-10 in Term 2, made up of lectures and workshops.The workshops will take up the majority of the time and there will be real opportunities for hands-on practice with the tools, discussion and debate.
