Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module aims to deepen the critical understanding of language assessment developed in the Language Testing specialist interest module (ET976). In this professional practice module, principles of good practice in test design, development and administration will be put into practice and opportunities will be provided to apply knowledge and understanding gained in the specialist module to practical tasks. Hands-on experience will be provided in areas such as qualitative and quantitative test analysis, (re-)design of a test section, development of materials for teacher training or the development of assessment guidelines for teachers. The scope of the professional practice module extends from classroom assessment for formative purposes to large-scale tests for summative assessment. Students engage in a project during the module to design and develop actual test materials. The written assignment assesses both the rationale for developing these test materials and the test materials themselves.

Principal learning outcomes

Principal Learning Outcomes By the end of the module students should be able to show a deeper knowledge and understanding of good principles in designing and developing language tests, in selecting appropriate input and text material, and in critically evaluating existing tests. They should also be able to understand and critically evaluate the theoretical constructs of communicative skills underlying language tests; show a critical understanding of the scope and needs of different assessment contexts; and demonstrate an awareness of procedures involved in the test development and administration process within a large-scale testing context.
