Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module aims to introduce you to translation as a form of intercultural communication. Translation will be explored within various contexts: translation and the media, translation and advertising, translation business and persuasion, translation and adaptation, translation and interpreting, translation and globalization. Recent conceptualizations of translation as a pervasive social practice will help us explore: the role that translators play in mediating communication across cultures in a variety of professional/cultural settings (e.g. business interpreting, legal translation) and the strategies they adopt to translate and mediate. Through the notion of ‘translation agency’, we will investigate contexts where translation is enacted by other agents (e.g. journalism, advertising) so as to reflect on the ethical dimensions and challenges of mediating between languages and cultures.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to demonstrate in-depth understanding and knowledge of the approaches to translation introduced in the course, to understand the crucial role that translation play in intercultural contexts, to identify translation strategies in a variety of contexts and to reflect on their own experiences of translation as ‘users’ and ‘agents’ of translation
