Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module provides opportunities for developing an understanding of the relationship between culture, language and communication and how knowledge of this relationship can especially inform teaching practice in the language learning classroom. Relevant intercultural communication literature will be explored and approaches to language-and-culture teaching from the perspectives of, for example, intercultural pragmatics, ethnography and drama will also be reviewed. A major aim of the module is for students to consider procedures, resources and activities for promoting competence in language-and-culture.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to explain and critique key concepts, models and research findings on language-and-culture learning and teaching; understand how culture can influence language use and language learning; describe and evaluate methods for learning and teaching languages; apply conceptual and empirical insights to the planning and design of language-and-culture learning courses; evaluate resources and activities for implementing a course on language-and-culture.
