Module content and teaching

Principal aims

All MA students take a two-term core module in German Cultural Studies, which considers some of the key critical debates that have shaped German understandings of culture. The module is designed to develop an understanding of key methods and approaches in cultural studies.

Principal learning outcomes

This module aims to: develop your understanding of key cultural studies methods and approaches; give insight into a range of theoretical debates in 20th and 21st century culture; develop your understanding of the place of German cultural theory and criticism within the wider field of cultural studies; provide a forum for debate with tutors and co-students on the relative merits of conflicting approaches; enable you to test various approaches by applying them to specific cultural artefacts (which may include, but are not limited to literary or filmic texts; develop your bibliographical and research skills, focusing on research areas; in which you aim to specialise in your assessed essays and/or dissertation

Timetabled teaching activities

The module runs in Term 1 and the first half of Term 2 via a combination of student-led seminars and student work groups. These are scheduled in alternate weeks.
