Principal aims

This module is concerned with how financial and other information is used for managerial planning, decision-making and control. The overall aim of this module is not to train students as management accountants but to help them become sufficiently familiar with management accounting techniques to enable them to make much more expert use of management information in their role as a manager involved in an organisation’s planning, decision-making and control. There is therefore a heavy emphasis on the practical application of management accounting and key aims are as follows: To understand the scope of management accounting and the classification of costs; To appreciate the need for “different costs for different purposes” and the alternative requirements with respect to costs for stock valuation, costs for decision making and costs for planning and control; To be able to identify the relevant costs and revenue for decision-making purposes and be able to properly account for qualitative factors; To be capable of applying these principles typical decisions, for example: The decision to launch a new product, pricing decisions, decisions concerning the mix of products produced and the capital investment decision; To understand the design of advanced accounting control systems and decision-making techniques for manufacturing and service organisations and appreciate the approaches relevant for profit, non-profit, public and private sector organisations; To gain an appreciation of recent research to explain how accounting systems function in different organisational and social contexts; To develops a technical and contextual grasp of management accounting and its many roles.

Principal learning outcomes

SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Understand and critique the technical and conceptual foundations of costing and management control systems; Explain ABC (Activity Based Costing) methodology and its applications; Contrast the use of marginal costing and absorption costing techniques Explain the theory of capital budgeting, its complications and its practical limitations; Compare the income effects of using different standard costing systems Identify suitable cost management approaches for different contexts; Understand the role of transfer pricing in divisional performance measurement; Explain the rationales behind strategic management accounting and balanced performance measurement systems; Explain the interdisciplinary nature of management accounting. KEY SKILLS: Develop and demonstrate written communication skills; Develop basic knowledge of the use of spreadsheets; Develop and demonstrate group work skills, oral communication and presentation skills.COGNITIVE SKILLS: Develop and demonstrate analytical and problem solving skills. SUBJECT-SPECIFIC/PROFESSIONAL SKILLS: Apply management accounting concepts and practices to analyse business problems; Deepen students’ knowledge of the use of spreadsheets; Prepare and present professional reports to recommend courses of action.
