Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module is about how knowledge – both new and old – leads to enhanced wealth creation or quality of life through innovation. Innovation is understood here as the process through which knowledge and creativity lead to product, process service or organisational change. Key themes in the module are the link between innovation and strategy, innovation and organisational structure and the role of ‘openness’ in successful innovation. An inter?disciplinary, integrative approach is adopted drawing on the managerial, strategic and technological literatures and making extensive use of case?study and statistical evidence from the research literature. Skills development focuses on extending students’ capabilities in evidence?based strategy formulation and business leadership. The module aims to provide students with an introduction to theory and leading practice relating to innovation and creativity in a range of operating environments.The core objectives of the module are: to introduce students to the main conceptual frameworks which have shaped research and practice on innovation and creativity; to cultivate in students an appreciation of the role of innovation and creativity in organisational and national performance; to provide an opportunity to develop innovation and creativity skills; to encourage insight into the practical steps which can be taken to enable creativity, design integration, inter?organisational knowledge sharing and strategy as part of firms’ innovation activity; to develop an integrated view of the innovation in different operating contexts.

Principal learning outcomes

"Subject knowledge and understanding: Define and apply key terms such as innovation, creativity, invention, boundary spanning links, open innovation; Recognise the importance of innovation and creativity to organisational performance and national development; Describe the key indicators of innovation and creativity and the 'geography' of innovation across the globe and between sectors and organisational types; Describe the main approaches to building capability for innovation and creativity in organisations and how these can be applied in a range of different types of organisations. Define the potential drivers and barriers to innovation and creativity in different organisational types. Key Skills: Demonstrate good decision making skills; Demonstrate effective communication skills Demonstrate leadership skills; Demonstrate developed analytical skills; Demonstrate creativity and openness to new ideas. Cognitive Skills: Demonstrate analytical and critical skills by applying concepts learnt during the module; Demonstrate an ability to undertake evidence based strategy formulation. Timetabled teaching activities

Total contact hours: Online classroom delivery and tutor support; Module duration (weeks): 6 months; Other activity: Distance learning plus online classroom taught session delivery. Students are provided with interactive WBS?authored study materials, integrated online classroom sessions and set texts. Throughout the module, students can undertake formative tasks which test their understanding. Further tutor?led support is available online.
