Module content and teaching
This module will focus on the question of how we can understand, explain and enhance the performance of organisations, whether public, private or not-for-profit. It will focus upon the techniques of corporate performance and look at how managers and other stake-holders interact in an often dynamic environment both to make judgments about corporate performance and to respond to these judgments. The module aims are: To enhance participants understanding of the dynamics of corporate performance including the interaction of internal actions, factors and policies and changes in the environment; To facilitate participants understanding of and skills in using the techniques for assessing and understanding corporate performance including the sources, validity and usefulness of data on corporate performance; To understand how best to manage/compare corporate performance and the limitations and problems associated with performance measurement/management; To understand the ‘contested’ nature of performance measurement and management and the implications of this for corporate performance.
Principal learning outcomes
Subject Knowledge and Understanding: The problems of corporate performance diagnosis; Consultant’s methodologies; The use and interpretation of statistical techniques in corporate performance analysis; Financial performance analysis; Human resource practice and organisational performance; Process implementation and innovation; Organisational change perspectives on corporate performance; Strategy paradigms and corporate performance. Key Skills: Understand how to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts using a range of communication media (written and oral presentation). Team working (the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others; to manage team-based projects, conflict and decision making). Numeracy (as demonstrated through the critical application of statistical techniques to corporate performance analysis and the use of financial and statistical information). Cognitive Skills: To be able to collect and analyse data on real organisations. To interpret these data effectively and to develop credible solutions and recommendations; To be able to reflect upon and challenge concepts and models presented in the course and to be able to identify the key indicators in assessing performance; To take an integrated view of performance assessment. Subject - specific/ professional skills: To demonstrate the ability to define, frame and solve corporate problems.
