Module content and teaching
Many contemporary organisations are replacing their legacy systems with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, that integrates all the major business processes (e.g. finance, sales, logistics) via a shared, cross-functional information system. This course examines the managerial issues and factors associated with the development of these complex, tightly-coupled software packages. Topics covered include the role of enterprise information systems in business process redesign, challenges and risks faced in their acquisition and implementation, and critical success factors governing their adoption and use. An in-depth understanding of enterprise system functionality is built around the use of SAP R/3, the leading commercially available ERP solution. Students gain hands-on experience in using SAP to configure a virtual enterprise. This practical grounding is complemented and enhanced by theoretical perspectives and critical understanding from case studies and research literature.
Principal learning outcomes
Subject knowledge and understanding: Demonstrate an understanding of: (i) the nature of enterprise information systems (ERP systems) in organisations and their role in the redesign/transformation of business processes and organisational integration; and (ii) the process and methodology of developing enterprise information systems (i.e. covering all stages of the adoption and implementation of ERP systems); ERP System Implementation. Key Skills: Obtain substantial hands-on experience in the configuration and implementation of an industrial-strength ERP system (SAP R/3 enterprise system) that enables cross-functionally integrated business processes. Key Skills: Be able to demonstrate critical understanding of the key management challenges and success factors attending the development of ERP systems (i.e. integrated enterprise information systems) in the modern firm.
Timetabled teaching activities
Total contact hours 48 hours (30 hours with NIE, 18 with PhD students); Lectures per week: 3 hours x 6 weeks; Laboratory sessions: 6 hours x 5 weeks (consisting of 2 x 3 hour lab sessions each week); Module duration (weeks, if applicable): 6 weeks spread over 1 Term.
