Module content and teaching
The module aims to enable students to understand the employment relations institutions and practices of four European countries (to be chosen each year among UK, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Poland); identify and account for similarities and differences across countries in employment relations institutions and practices; and critically evaluate competing theories of comparative employment relations. They will be expected to engage with debates about cross-national convergence in employment relations. In addition, the module will enable students to improve their teamworking and presentational skills through group presentations and class discussion. Although focussed on Europe for methodological reasons (availability of comparative information, and variety of systems), the module will also consider non-European countries as background comparisons: for instance, the UK may be contrasted with the USA, or Poland with other post-communist countries such as Russia or China.
Principal learning outcomes
Subject knowledge and understanding: Demonstrate a critical understanding of the employment relations institutions and practices of four European countries (to be chosen among UK, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Poland); Identify and account for similarities and differences across countries in employment relations institutions and practices. Key skills: Communication skills: summarise key arguments and evidence; Demonstrate improved team-working and presentational skills; Use information technology to identify recent developments.Cognitive skills: Critically evaluate competing theories of comparative employment relations. Engage with debates about cross-national convergence in employment relations. Subject-Specific/Professional Skills: The ability to identify practical and academic research issues and to explore them, using appropriate background literature and research methods. The ability to analyze specific employment problems in their wider social and conceptual context.
