Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The aim of the module is to introduce students to current thinking and debate in the area of researching equality and diversity in organisations and the labour market. In particular the module aims to build on knowledge developed during core modules by offering detailed thematic study of the area making explicit links with current empirical research conducted by staff in IROB. There is a specific emphasis on how to go about conducting research in the equality and diversity area and students are asked to conduct small-scale group-based research project work, providing an opportunity for students to practice research skills before their dissertation.

Principal learning outcomes

Subject Knowledge and Understanding: Demonstrate a detailed and reflective understanding of contrasting organisational and governmental policy approaches to equality and diversity; Understand the theories and concepts underpinning these approaches drawing on relevant literature; Identify the differing perspectives of multiple industrial relations stakeholders; Make links between theories and concepts and empirical material.Key Skills: Demonstrate advanced written skills; Demonstrate ability to work with others. Cognitive Skills: Understand how to locate equality and diversity approaches within broader organisational contexts and wider industrial relations debates.Critically assess a variety of theories, concepts, frameworks and perspectives which inform the study of equality and diversity.Subject Specific Skills: Design and conduct a piece of small scale empirical research fieldwork in the equality and diversity area; Critically analyse the viability of a piece of research including its methods and findings.
