Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module will aim to stretch thinking and practice both through more in-depth analysis of the theory and practice of leadership in different contexts and also from intensive experiential challenges in real time. It will also deepen and expand the participants understanding of the problematic nature of strategic management and the nature of their practice.

Principal learning outcomes

Subject knowledge and understanding: Demonstrate an understanding of a wide range of leadership models and theories; Select an appropriate framework/theory for different leadership contexts and challenges; Understand a range of models of strategy in the private, public and third sectors; Demonstrate capability for strategic thinking and action and for leadership of strategic change; Understand methodologies for designing a corporate strategy; Understand strategic choice and creation of options. Key Skills: Show an understanding of the complexity generated where values are made explicit and contested through democratic processes; Have a clear understanding of the key ideas and limitations behind various modules of strategy and the implications for leadership and management practice. Cognitive Skills: Formulate and test concepts and capabilities for strategic leadership in complex and contested situations; Have an understanding of what is meant in both theory and practice by ‘strategic thinking’; Critically evaluate specific strategic choices in substantive and operational terms. Subject-Specific/Professional Skills: Experience and test their own potential for leading teams, networks & organisations in a challenging real life context; Test these ideas in practice against some specific complex real world strategic challenges facing another organisation or partnership.

Timetabled teaching activities

Total contact hours: 21 hours. Lectures per week: 6 x 1 œ hour lectures. Seminars per week: 3 x 1 œ hour group cast study. Tutorials per week: 3 x 1 œ hour tutor-led workshops. Module duration (weeks, if applicable): 3 – days in residential block. Other (please describe):e.g. distance-learning, intensive weekend teaching: 2 x 1 œ hour visiting practitioner evening lectures; 45 hours guided reading; 55 hours assignment preparation and completion; 30 hours work- based application/reflection.
