Module content and teaching
The objective of this module is to develop a participant’s knowledge of the methodological challenges and choices associated with ‘doing research in the public sector’. The Postgraduate Diploma in Police Leadership and Management upon which this MSc builds does not offer a research specific component, a lacuna that this compulsory module will address. The primary aim is to gain an appreciation of the wide range of methods and resources used in the social sciences to address management, governance and policy related research questions. The second aim is to examine recent developments in the use of social and economic research evidence to inform policy and management practice in the public sector. We will consider the methodological strengths and weaknesses in specific examples of ‘evidence based policy/management’ research. The third aim is to enhance the ability of students to design and undertake a modest piece of academic, work relevant research.
Principal learning outcomes
Subject knowledge and understanding: Understand the role and nature of social research evidence required to inform the development, implementation and administration of public policy; Appreciate the diversity of methods used to gather social research evidence and the variety of resources available to researchers; Explore and experience the process of commissioning new research designed to inform or evaluate policy initiatives in the provision of public services. Key skills: Demonstrate the ability and motivation to apply and further develop professional research skills independently. Cognitive skills: Be aware of ontological/ epistemological biases and their implications for research design and credibility; Critically assess policy and management relevant research; Select appropriate research methods in designing a research project. Subject specific/professional skills: Design and carry out policy/management relevant research with a critical, reflexive disposition.

Total contact hours: 21 hours. Lectures per week: 6 x 1 œ hour lectures. Seminars per week: 3 x 1 œ hour group cast study. Tutorials per week: 3 x 1 œ hour tutor-led workshops. Module duration (weeks, if applicable): 3 – days in residential block.
