Module content and teaching
This module aims to develop an understanding of some of the challenges faced by management within an increasingly volatile organizational environment particular, it aims to: 1) Introduce students to the major frameworks for understanding how different forms of organizational change might be evaluated, analysed and managed; 2) Build students’ skills in analysing how the cultural and micro-political dimensions of organizational life impact on both the need for change and the ways in which it manifests itself; 3) Develop students’ understanding of various strategies and tactics for the mobilisation of support for necessary change initiatives; 5) Enable students to critically engage with debates about the limitations of organizational change and its ideological dimensions.
Principal learning outcomes
Subject knowledge and understanding: 1.Display an understanding of what constitutes organizational change; 2.Identify different types of change dependent on context, structure and those associated approaches to managing it; 3.Critically analyse the strengths and limitations of associated change management approaches; 4.Identify the ways in which competing interests frequently serve to drive and contest the outcome of organizational change processes; 5.Appreciate how political, affective and ideological factors impact on the change process. Subject-Specific/Professional Skills: 1.Apply conceptual frameworks to particular examples; 2.Find and present information and data in a succinct and relevant way in order to build arguments; 3.Engage with others in effectively completing work tasks. Cognitive Skills: 1.Engage in critical analysis of change strategies; 2.Recognise and critically engage with assumptions underpinning conceptual frameworks; 3.Formulate and test assumptions about how change can be managed within varying environmental and structural contexts. Key Skills: 1.Demonstrate skills in academic and business communication in both written and oral forms, and the ability to work on and manage projects; 2.Demonstrate interpersonal skills that will be useful in workplaces, such as influencing, resolving conflict and team work.
