Module content and teaching

Principal aims

Will provide students with a core knowledge of strategic management approaches; Will provide an in-depth analysis of contrasting and competing schools of thought in approaching strategy; Will distinguish between strategic positioning models and process models of practice and implementation; Will formalise students with leading edge knowledge and research in the field of strategy; Will develop students’ critical and analytical skills through group work and presentations.

Principal learning outcomes

Subject Knowledge: Have a thorough knowledge of the main theories of strategy; Be able to recognise the strengths and weaknesses of current theory in strategy; Will provide a broad knowledge and understanding of the inter-actions between external environments and strategic thinking and acting. Cognitive Skills: Be able to analyse critically academic papers to understand key issues in epistemology and ontological assumptions in strategy; Be able to analyse case studies to propose potential solutions to strategic problems; Be able to understand the processes of strategic decision making. Subject-Specific/Professional Skills; Will provide an awareness of conducting research into strategy; Will provide an awareness of analytical frameworks and their application. Key Skills: Written communication skills will be developed through group work and preparation for the examination; Oral skills will be developed through discussion and group presentations; Problem solving skills will be developed through group and individual analysis of strategy problems; The development of leadership team-building and project management skills will be developed through groupwork.
