Module content and teaching

Principal aims

"To help health care professionals understand ethical theory, codes of ethics, and the relationship between ethics and law; and how these inform ethical decisions in health care practice; to provide health care professionals with the skills to identify ethical issues in their practice and to take part in the process of resolving ethical conflict; to discuss ethical dilemmas in relation to key areas of health care including, end of life care, reproductive medicine, resource allocation, treatment of children, and mental health."

Principal learning outcomes

"By the end of the module the student will have gained: a demonstrable understanding of ethical theory, codes of ethics, principles and values in health care ethics; an awareness of the range of ethical issues that arise in health care practice; the ability to analyse ethical difficulties arising in health care practice, and justify ethically acceptable solutions; an awareness of the ethical dilemmas that the dying process generates; an ability to discuss ethical theory and practice in relation to the law."
