Module content and teaching
Principal aims
This module will focus on the centrality of the notions of life and vitalism in contemporary French philosophy. It will take as point of departure some of the most important theoretical issues in which the notion of life has been mobilized during the 20th century and try and link the historical mutation of the notion with the transformations and revolutions that occurred in the scientific field. It will clarify the different meanings and the range of “vitalism”: methodological, ontological, ethical and political.
Principal learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students should have a good understanding of the importance of the concept of life and its place in contemporary French thought. They should be able to discuss critically a variety of texts and topics both in seminar discussions and essays.
