Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module will offer critical engagement with Descartes' Meditations at an advanced level. Students will be expected to engage critically with the main arguments of the text, articulate their own views of the relative strengths and weaknesses of these arguments, engage with the relevant secondary literature, show sensitivity to interpretive issues and appreciate the aims of the text given the historical context in which it was written.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should... Have a systematic and advanced understanding and knowledge of Descartes’ text, the main arguments of the text, and the arguments of a number of the key commentators who have written on the Meditations. Have read and interpret Descartes’ text, engage critically at an advanced level with the main arguments of the text, articulate their own views of the relative strengths and weaknesses of these arguments, engage with the relevant secondary literature, show sensitivity to interpretive issues and appreciate the aims of the text given the historical context in which it was written. Be able to work autonomously at an advanced level to articulate their own view of the relative merits of conflicting interpretations in the literature, and engage critically with other points of view. Be able to demonstrate sound judgement and initiative in selecting appropriate texts and methods for their investigation of a specifically circumscribed problem and should have acquired an advanced ability to pursue and organize philosophical research using a range of sources (print and electronic media), documenting research carefully, and showing the ability to engage independently in philosophical debate.
