Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To relate international trade to the phenomenon of globalisation, particularly in terms of whether regional trading blocs accelerate or retard globalisation of the international trading system; To understand the relationship between multilateralism and regionalism in international trade and to evaluate the ways in which the tensions affect the content and outcome of multilateral and regional negotiations; To appreciate the significance of national trade policies in the international trade system and to understand the principal tensions in the contemporary international trading system between countries and regional entities; To examine and analyse the issues at play in the Millennium Round in the light of the conclusions of the Uruguay Round and subsequent developments; To assess the extent to which the World Trade Organisation will be able to contribute to the evolution of a multilateral trading regime; To analyse the particular contributions of the United States and the European Union to the evolution of the world trading system; To understand and evaluate the process of regionalisation in Latin America and the Asia Pacific, particularly with regard to NAFTA, Mercosur and APEC.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to: Recognise and discuss crucial issues in international trade and be aware of the positions of key international actors on these issues, Discuss the political economy of globalisation, Identify and discuss the regional dimensions of international trade, Apply the knowledge they have gained to questions of policy affecting various organisations in the public and private sectors.
