Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module is designed to meet the following aims: *Develop an understanding of the origins and developments of EU cooperation in foreign policy; *Explore the main theoretical approaches to explaining Europe’s role in the world; *Offer an understanding of the institutional development of the EU, as they relate to external relations; analyse the key policy dilemmas facing the EU in a select number of regions and countries around the world; assess contemporary debates about Europe’s role in international relations, with reference to key changes to the international environment witnessed in recent years.

Principal learning outcomes

On completion of this module, you should be able to: *Demonstrate an appreciation of the evolution of Europe’s external relations; *Critically discuss the characteristics of the EU’s institutional process in the foreign policy domain; *Assess Europe’s strengths and weaknesses as an international actor; critically analyse, both orally and in writing, the current challenges facing the EU internationally.
