Principal aims

*To provide an advanced level discussion of the contemporary dynamics of US security policy through taking into consideration both the historical context and different theoretical debates; *To allow students to identify and explore ‘new’ issues on the US security policy agenda; *To develop student abilities to present a well-made, coherent and logically consistent argument supported by a coherent theoretical framework; *To enhance student research skills through the collection and analysis of information from a wide range of sources.

Principal learning outcomes

The modes of delivering and assessing the learning objectives detailed below are specified in the Handbook. Please be aware that the achievement of these aims and learning objectives depends upon not only effective teaching by staff, but also upon your efforts to take full advantage of the learning opportunities that the module offers. Independent study and self-directed learning are major components of MA education. You need to demonstrate proficiency in these to pass at this level. By the end of the module you should be able to: Locate the study of US security policy within broader debates in the study of International Relations; Assess the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to (and concepts in) the study of US security policy; Analyse, compare, and critically evaluate fundamental assumptions and arguments in the literature on US security policy; Demonstrate familiarity with historical contexts and contemporary challenges of US security policy; Construct and substantiate a critical argument; Possess good investigative and information retrieval skills, including familiarity with information technology.
