Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The connections between transitional justice and international development are increasingly acknowledged as relevant for both improving practice and theory in the different domains of activity and intervention. Accordingly, this module aims to: 1. Explore the ways in which transitional justice can be understood as a development issue and the ways in which international development can be understood as a transitional justice issue. 2. Assess the implications for how we understand ‘justice’ if we bring these two fields closer together. 3. Reflect on the policy, practice and theoretical implications of the interconnections between transitional justice and international development. 4. Provide students with opportunities to learn through critical engagement with different actors including scholars, practitioners and policy makers.

Principal learning outcomes

In line with other modules offered at the MA level, and with complementarity with the module PO901 in mind, the intended learning outcomes are developing: 1. Awareness and ability to understand, evaluate and assess the key debates and mechanisms of transitional justice. 2. Ability to reflect on the ways in which ‘justice’ is framed by both transitional justice and international development. 3. Ability to critically assess the policy, practice and theoretical implications of the intersections between transitional justice and international development. 4. Confidence in written and oral presentation of ideas and construction of arguments. 5. Application of learning through contributions to online platforms such as justiceinfo.net and other such activities.

Timetabled teaching activities

10 weeks comprising: 1. Introductory lecture in week 1 with a film viewing of ‘The Reckoning: The Battle for the International Criminal Court’ followed by a discussion focused on guide questions such as ‘what different understandings of justice are present in the film?’, ‘what justice compromises and challenges can we identify in the film?’, ‘are we living in an era of transitional justice?’. This film viewing (45 minutes) and discussion will be complemented by the core reading for the seminar on the genealogy of transitional justice and the increasing expansion of the scope of transitional justice to cover ‘development’ issues. 2. Weekly group work and applied learning. 3. Regular participant presentations. 4. Invited speakers working in policy and practice for case study focused seminars. The timetable would therefore require 1 seminar room for 2 hours per week for 10 weeks. The two invited speakers will come from the domain of policy and/or practice and following a short lecture from me will present a case study and then run a workshop with the students combining reflections on the reading for that week with experience of applied work in the field. I will remain present throughout the session with the invited speaker and manage the learning space. Following these two applied sessions the students will each write a short reflection piece to be shared with course participants in an online discussion forum which will run alongside the module.
