Module content and teaching

Principal aims

 develop an understanding of the origins and institutional developments of EU foreign, security and defence policy;  explore the main conceptual and theoretical approaches to understanding and explaining the EU’s role in the world;  analyse the key policy dilemmas facing the EU in relation to key policy dimensions of its external relations  Critically discuss the EU’s engagement with a select number of regions and countries around the world;  assess contemporary debates about the EU’s role in international relations in the context of a fluid global security context

Principal learning outcomes

On completion of this module, you should have:  developed your presentation (oral) skills  enhanced your research skills  improved your abilities to work independently and as part of a group  sharpened your critical analytical capabilities You should also be able to:  demonstrate an appreciation of the evolution of the EU’s foreign, security and defence policy  evaluate the EU’s strengths and weaknesses as an international actor;  critically analyse, both orally and in writing, the current challenges facing the EU internationally  offer policy advice for enhancing the EU’ capability as an international actor
