Module content and teaching

Principal aims

Computational and mathematical modelling skills are becoming increasingly important in many areas of psychology, and employment prospects are enhanced for individuals who possess them. This course will introduce students to basic and intermediate-level computational modelling techniques using high-level programming languages (MATLAB and Mathematica). Model fitting and model comparison techniques will be covered in detail. A range of model architectures will be examined, including mathematical models of memory; connectionist models of language, and exemplar models of categorization and identification. A particular focus will be on the relation between theory and data.

Principal learning outcomes

Read, understand, and critically evaluate academic articles that report computational and mathematical models of psychological processes to the point of being able to implement the published model; Describe and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the currently most important models of recognition, categorisation, free recall, and serial recall; Represent and implement a psychological hypothesis either mathematically or in the form of a computer program; understand and analyse the relation between theory and data; Undertake a detailed analysis of the performance of a computational model via exploration of its parameter space. Understand and apply advanced model-fitting and model-comparison techniques.
