Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The dissertation module an opportunity to conduct independent research on a topic that reflects your academic interests. The module is assessed with a 15,000 word paper which will include a well-rounded presentation of an initial puzzle or problem, a justification of the research methods chosen, an extensive analysis of the central arguments or findings, relevant conclusions and a bibliography. The final result should be a coherent argument that flows logically from the initial statement of the problem, offers a detailed examination of evidence, and draws conclusions on the basis of the evidence. STudents taking this module participate in two training workshops as well as having indiviudal support from a supervisor.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to: identify research problems or questions, as well as appropriate methodologies to address them; identify, understand and critically evaluate a wide range of relevant sources; conduct research in accordance with professional ethical guidelines; identify and mobilize key concepts and theories and apply them to the research questions; produce a structured and coherent argument, supported by evidence; write to prescribed length with full use of academic conventions of writing and referencing; and manage time and workload effectively.
