Module content and teaching

Principal aims

1) To provide an historical overview of the development of the museums and heritage sector 2) To identify current policy issues in the museums and heritage sector 3) To explain the changing nature of core policy concerns in the museums and heritage sector 4) To establish the relationships that exist between policy choices and management practices in the museums and heritage sectors 5) To differentiate between the policy and management practices that are associated with forms of material and intangible heritage

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to: ◾Demonstrate familiarity with the main developments in museum and heritage policy Understand the principles upon which museum and heritage policy is based ◾Question the assumptions upon which museum and heritage policy is based Evaluate the importance of international, national and local differences for the policies and practices of museums around the world ◾Identify the key actors in the making of museum and heritage policies and practices at international, national and local levels Identify the key actors in the management of museum and heritage policies and practices at international, national and local levels ◾Assess and evaluate the evidence and arguments that are used to justify museum and heritage policies and practices around the world Undertake effective research ◾Communicate effectively their arguments and ideas Develop conceptual thinking at an advanced level Develop independent thinking at an advanced level
