Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module builds on Year 1 Introductory Laboratories. It aims to enable students to: Become more skilled in synthesis, as exemplified by the synthesis of a variety of organic, coordination and organometallic compounds; Become reasonably skilled in recording IR and UV spectra of their compounds and use this coupled with NMR data to identify and characterise reaction products; Build on practical skills developed in year 1 Introductory Laboratories dealing with bench work and instrumentation; Highlight the chemistry discussed in core modules; Recording and processing raw experimental data; Gain confidence in planning experiments.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: Work effectively and safely in the chemical laboratory; Carry out multi-step synthesis of organic and inorganic materials. Set up and monitor instrumentation and record results Isolate and purify compounds by a range of techniques Assess the identity and purity of a reaction product by various spectroscopic means Take good experimental notes, process raw data and present results; Use spreadsheets such as Excel to manipulate data, and draw clear graphs; Write a well constructed lab report, presenting the crucial data, in a logical clear style; Propose and plan an experiment which is suitable for Year one student.

Timetabled teaching activities

All CATS weightings: 11 hrs Spectroscopy lectures and 4hrs Spectroscopy Workshops, plus the following laboratory sessions: 6 CATS 20 hrs (Spectroscopy Lab only) 24 CATS 128 hrs (Spectroscopy Lab 20 hrs, Carousel 108 hrs) 30 CATS 164 hrs (Spectroscopy Lab 20 hrs, Carousel 144 hrs)
