Module content and teaching
To develop an awareness of key thermodynamic, , physical, electronic and optical properties of solid-state materials, and how they can be measured and understood in a chemical context. To develop an appreciation of the relationship between the structure (at the atomic level) and properties of a material by exploring the properties of polymorphs of a single substance and examining how doping can tune the properties of a material. To introduce students to the fundamental principles behind the function and the development of basic electronic devices.
Principal learning outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to: Describe the structures of simple binary and ternary inorganic solids; Describe the structures of molecular materials; Understand the concept of crystal symmetry; Understand and use quantitative measure of physical, mechanical and thermodynamic properties; Discuss concepts of bonding in the solid state; Understand the behaviour of electrons in different types of solid state structure; Relate the structures of solid-state materials to their electronic and physical properties.
Timetabled teaching activities
5 weeks, 17hrs contact time ( lectures - 3hrs a week, turtorials 2x 1hr). 58 hours of directed study.
