Module content and teaching

Principal aims

Quantum mechanics is the basis for the understanding of many chemical phenomena including photochemistry and spectroscopy. Building on the elementary concepts introduced over the first two years, this module develops more rigorously the tools needed to understand how the electronic structure of molecules is computed and how advanced quantum mechanical concepts are used to study various aspects of the dynamics, from electronically excited states to nuclear spin dynamics. This module also explores the state-of-the-art experimental techniques used to probe the evolution of excited states in real time.

Principal learning outcomes

The students will develop a theoretical understanding of electronic structure theory and a practical knowledge of how electronic structure calculations are performed. They will lean the language and the basic concepts of photochemistry and photophysics, becoming able to access the current literature on the subject. Finally, they will deepen their understanding of nuclear magnetic resonance applied to the study of proteins by learning the physical basis of nuclear spin relaxation, exchange and motional averaging.
