Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module seeks to explore what was distinctively ‘Roman’ about Roman culture and society, both at its centre in Rome, and all around its empire. We examine some of the major frameworks within which people lived their lives, considering the impact of an individual’s legal status, profession, and place of habitation, and we also study major products of ‘high culture’ (both artistic and literary). The impact of political change upon society and culture is an on-going theme.

Principal learning outcomes

Become familiar with key aspects of the culture and society of ancient Rome from the late first century BC to early third century AD. Appreciate the limitations of different types of ancient source material. Develop critical and analytical approaches to modern scholarship. Transferrable skills: essay writing - how to produce academic writing; oral presentation.

Timetabled teaching activities

One two-hour lecture per week, Terms 1-2 Weeks 1-10; Term 3 Weeks 1-4 (one week of which = field trip); three seminars per term in Terms 1-2.
