Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module is intended to allow sustained engagement with the work of a few important literary and cultural theorists. The format enables us to read widely across the work of the chosen theorists and to develop a deep, informed and detailed knowledge of their ideas and methods. During 2010-11, we will mainly read Raymond Williams and Pierre Bourdieu during Term 1, and Karl Marx and Michel Foucault during Term 2. Term 1 will address such questions as the purview of 'English' studies, the relation between literature and society, the historicality of literary form, 'distinction' and the 'pure gaze' of the aesthetic. Term 2 will be focused more centrally on drawing out the singularity and thrust of Marx's and Foucault's thought, placing the two writers into conjunction and disjunction.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to identify and critically assess significant principles and claims within the field of modern critical and cultural theory.
