Module content and teaching

Principal aims

Students will encounter a variety of twentieth-century and contemporary exophonic (i.e. texts written outside the mother tongue) literary texts - some originally composed in English and others translated - and be asked to critically engage with the phenomenon of exophony in the modern era, examining exophony's relationship to trauma, exile, migration, the nation state and the postcolonial. The module further asks students to consider the implications of exophony for the self, the text, the reader and society. It will also investigate the extent to which translational processes - in the widest sense - might play a role in exophony.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to demonstrate critical awareness of what might motivate the decision to write in an adopted literary language and of the personal, political, stylistic and thematic implications of exophony.
