Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The intention of this module is to: 1) Consider how their personal knowledge and experience of leadership relates to academic research. 2) Create an understanding of the role of the leader across children’s services; 3) Develop knowledge and understanding of the diverse range of leadership models and roles in children’s services 4) Facilitate the development and understanding of the theory, concepts and ideas of leadership to consider how they are applied in children’s services; 5) Explore the relevance of research to support children health, emotional well being and learning; 6) Enable students to develop their research skills; study skills, personal development and leadership skills.

Principal learning outcomes

1) Demonstrate an understanding of the developments in children’s services, from policy and practice, that have influenced the development of contemporary children’s services 2) Discuss with a depth of understanding of the role, responsibilities and attributes of those in leading roles for children’s services including an international perspective; 3) Show an awareness of the complexity and challenges faced by leaders of children’s services in 21st century Britain; 4) Source, evaluate, critically analyse and disseminate research studies focussed on leadership for children’s services; 5) Critically reflect on their capacity to work in large and small groups, develop group protocols and create an action plan for continuous improvement; 6) Communicate with confidence using a range of concepts and ideas via media technologies and online learning.
